The "Iron" Ride is a scenic, fully-supported, two-day bicycle ride from the University of Alabama to Auburn University. Riders celebrate the infamous, cross-state rivalry just before the annual "Iron" Bowl. The inaugural ride took place October 13th & 14th, 2007. A handful of adventurous bicyclists from Birmingham, Montgomery, and Atlanta traversed nine scenic counties along lightly-traveled county roads over the weekend. The ride started in front of Denny Bryant Stadium Saturday morning and finished at Prattville H.S. 104 hilly miles later. Riders spent Saturday night in Prattville before riding a more relaxing 75 mile mix of hills and flatland the next morning. Sunday's ride passed by Jordan O'Hare Stadium and ended at Chewacla State Park in Auburn. Two hundred dollars was donated on the ride's behalf to the Southern Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
The 2nd Annual Iron Ride will take place next October, 2008. Barring any road closures or road openings, the route will be the same. Bicyclists who want to depart and arrive at the same location can ride a one-day, out-and-back (60 or 80 mile) course from Prattville H.S. on Saturday. Online registration will be available at Active.Com in early 2008. Send questions or comments and questions to mjabel@knology.net or call (334) 834-3377.
